The Girl With Seven Hearts X (March 21, 2013 | 12/52)
She reached the house as her twin cried out from inside. Held up by only her neck, the Man gripped her in front of the window, waiting on her other half to arrive to see his little show.
Their eyes locked; she saw her other half go to open her mouth when the Man’s hands twisted sharply. Her eyes bulged and the Girl screamed out as she felt her other half go limp in the man’s arms. She felt her own body start to quake; one by one her three and a half remaining hearts began to ache, knowing they would never be whole again. Quiet tears started to form in her eyes and she blinked them away.
The Man moved away from the window. His little show was over; even if she hadn’t, he had thoroughly enjoyed himself for this whole process. He was always someone who took what was his, why should a mere child be any exception to this? The days and nights of torture would sit in his memory for a while, at least until the next child came wandering into his path and refused his charms. This was his future and fortune; he had spent his whole life searching for someone to fix him and had only found resistance and people who needed to be broken.
He meandered down the stairs and out the ornate door. A hundred feet away, the Girl held her ground, gasping for breath and trying not to shake. He could feel her fear, smell her desperation and panic from a mile away. He breathed in deeply, enjoying the moment. His lens focused in on her face and he smiled a grotesque grin that twisted his face into several parts.
“This is why you don’t just give yourself to everyone. Word of advice, Girl, if you never let anyone in, you never get hurt.” His grin widened and his lens flared brilliant red. “Those marks we make sure must hurt now. Why can’t you just enjoy the freedoms that I’m giving you? Relax. Just enjoy yourself. I’ve set you free!”
The Girl started to move forward towards the Man.
“When this is over, those marks you speak of will morn my other Half. They’ll let me into their homes to grieve and shelter me on the nights when the wind rattles my bones. They’ll continue to teach me and to love me; those little marks will make a huge difference in my healing, and one day I’ll learn to love again. It may not be today, it may not be years down the road, but those that I’ve allowed in will come to me in my time of need. But you— you, Sir, won’t survive past today.” She moved again towards him, eyes never leaving his face, alert in case he decided to try anything. “All those hearts that you thought you split in two, my body that you claimed to desire, all you’ve done is further my resolve to love even more. You wanted to teach me to control my heart and yet all you did was attempt to break it. You can’t control a wild thing…”
The Girl stood within inches of his face. His breath smelled of blood and apples.
He reached out and stroked her hair, waiting for her to recoil.
“Are you sure you don’t want to be mine? You’d make such a pretty piece of my collect—”
The Man looked down as a sharp pain came from his abdomen. The Girl’s face remained impassive as she twisted the knife into position. Blood started to stain her dress and she looked into his shocked eyes. His hands started towards her throat and his mouth let out a bubble of blood.
“You see this? This I’ll enjoy,” she whispered. Her arm twisted and pulled out the blade, “You wanted to control the story, to make this about you, but you can’t control a story with too many players.”
She continued to glare down at him as his body crumbled to the ground. Finally his lens stopped focusing on her and the red light went out. She breathed out and turned around to begin her long walk back to her cottage. She hadn’t enjoyed that at all, but her remaining three and a half hearts released a collective sigh. She would remember this by the scar tissue that remained, but the ache that cried out for her other Half, but she knew that time would help her heal.
She turned around to look at the scene; no good had ever come of trying to tame a wild thing.
